A heat pump uses both the heated condenser coils and the cooling coils. During the summer, when the consumer needs cool air, the heat pump blows water over the cooling coils of the heat pump. In winter, the unit provides warm air as it blows over the heated condenser coils. Heat pumps replace or assist the home's central heating unit. Heat pumps are rated in BTUs, which stands for British Thermal Units. One BTU is the amount of energy it takes to raise a pound of water one degree. With respect to an air conditioner or heater, the unit is measured in tons. Each ton of heating or cooling capacity is equal to 12,000 BTUs. So a 1-ton heat pump creates or absorbs 12,000 BTUs. A 2.5 ton unit handles 30,000 BTUs, since 12,000 times 2.5 equals 30,000.

A major factor when sizing a heat pump  is the outside temperature. Homes in a temperate environment work well with a smaller unit. Homes in a cooler area need more heating ability. Figure 55 to 60 BTUs per square foot in very cold climates. Also, consider the amount of insulation in the home. Homes with more energy-efficient insulation in the ceiling and walls require less heating than older, less insulated homes. Ask Eastern Ventures to assist you in determining the right  size unit for your application.

Mini Split Installation

A mini-split system must be installed by a qualified HVAC (Heating, ventilating, & air conditioning) company to ensure any issues encountered in the future are not due to improper installation / workmanship. Even though mini-split setup is below the expertise requirements of central AC systems, these are not "plug-n-play" units that can be properly installed without specialized equipment and prior HVAC - electrical knowledge.
